When to visit Évora |
Winter, spring, summer or fall, the truth is that this city has it all. From sunshine to a cool breeze, the southern air of the Alentejo is always quite compelling. If you are a nature lover, the best time of year to visit Évora would be during the spring, a time that will allow you to presence the birth of a new season and the blossoming of the wild flowers. However, the gorgeous plains and vast space of the countryside contribute to a rather breathtaking scenario towards the fall. Nevertheless, Évora has a series of events that will surely grab your attention, no matter what time of year you decide to go on your holiday. Between May and June, you can visit the exciting traditional Feira S.João, (St. John’s Fair) an event filled with a variety of cultural activities. From Portuguese craft, to gastronomy and music, the Feira S.João is considered to be the most popular fair in the Alentejo. The event lasts for 12 days and always has something fun for everyone. In July, the air is filled with the sweet sound of music thanks to the Festival Évora Clássica. (Classic Évora Festival) This festival was initially intended to be a three day event exclusively devoted to classical music. Nowadays, the festival is a well-known and prestigious happening that gathers musicians from countries all over, to share cultural diversity through music. The festival takes place in the astounding Palácio de Cadaval (royal property of the Duke and Duchess of Cadaval) and has successfully obtained the respect and admiration deserved, year after year. Towards the months of November and December, you can make your way to the Páteo do Salemo that will lead you to FIKE, the Évora International Short Film Festival. Whether or not you are passionate about cinematography, the talented work exposed is always a great point of interest. Every year, short films created by upcoming filmmakers from all over the world are screened, prizes are distributed according to different categories, and important personalities of the movie industry are present to give lectures. Any of these destinations are a great option while holidaying in Évora. All events are easy to find, and close to the city’s historical centre (approximately 4 - 10 minutes walking). Seen that everything is so close by, leaving your car parked and opting for a relaxing walk through the city, is recommended. While planning a trip to Évora it is also important to keep in mind that some places may be closed or less accessible due to national holidays. Some of the most significant dates are January the 1st, Freedom Day on the 25th of April, and Labour Day on May 1st. Because the majority of the Portuguese population is Roman Catholic, Easter along with Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, celebrated on December 24th and 25th, are major holidays. All Saint’s Day on the 1st of November and Restoration of Independence Day on the 1st of December, are also dates of great relevance in the country.
