Immerse yourself in nature on the island of Lanzarote. Acclaimed for sustainable tourism and a wealth of natural attractions, the island has been classified by UNESCO with a prestigious biosphere status. Much of the traditional architecture is still preserved in the whitewashed villages. Centuries-old fortresses, including the imposing Castillo de San Gabriel and Castillo de San José, have been converted to museums and galleries offering insights into the island’s history and culture. Local artist and architect, César Manrique, was responsible for creating many of the island’s attractions, integrating unique works into the landscape. Prominent avant-garde sculptures, known as “wind toys” can be found found all over Lanzarote, while the artfully designed Cactus Garden features over 1400 fascinating species. The interior of the island offers raw, stunning landscapes, particularly the unforgettable terrain of Timanfaya National Park. Visit El Lago Verde, a striking emerald, algae-covered lagoon near the village of El Golfo, which offers some of the best seafood in the island. Explore the tunnels of Cueva de los Verdes (Green Caves), formed 3000 years ago by volcanic activity. Visitors will be amazed by the grotto of Jameos del Agua, an extraordinary subterranean auditorium with an underground lagoon and restaurant. Set in extensive botanical gardens, Guinate Tropical Park has a large variety of exotic bird and animal species, including meerkats, Humbolt penguins and performing parrots. For a peaceful time with the family, Pardelas Nature Park is an organic children’s farm and recreation park, featuring donkey rides, local food, handicrafts and farm animals. If you need some time in the sun, head to the picturesque coves of Papagayo on the sunny southern tip of the island, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Discover unspoilt beaches in the remote north near Orzola. Take a languid stroll along the golden stretch of Famara beach, watching kitesurfers skip along the waves and paragliders soaring peacefully. The island’s numerous miradors (lookout points) offer spectacular coastal views, including the captivating panorama from El Mirador del Rio. |
